Garden and Growth Spurt

This Sunday our friend D said in passing, "K has gained 2 lbs since Wednesday!"  I groggily turned to L, a dietician for infants and asked, "Isn’t there a growth spurt at 3 months?"  She grinned at me and nodded.

I am so tired.  All we do is nurse, and (she) sleeps.  I need more sleep, but life goes on…

We are trying this year to make the community garden our after dinner family activity/exercise.  Once the garden gets weedy, the mosquitoes come out and I get perfectionistic, all the fun my boys had in picking out the seeds and potato variety is gone.  Gardening is just one more thing Mom insists on.  So, we’ve trying to make gardening a nightly family thing, with an emphasis on family, not gardening.

So, the boys climbed a mountain of topsoil, to loosen for Daddy to haul over to the plots.  We’ve transplanted 4 broccolli seedlings, and planted a lb of pink potatos that are pink all through, not just the skins.  I don’t know their culinary use yet, we bought them because they were pretty.  DH is planning how to make the kick plates around the raised be on our second plot more sturdy, the family that installed them in that plot used a less sturdy method than DH likes, and they need repair.  His kickplates from last year on our plot that we’ve had for 8 years (and has our rhubarb in it) is very sturdy.

The city has just made us a connector into the water main.  We no longer have to deal with the Vietnam era water buffalo, and call the city park department if it is empty.  It is very nice to have a short hose and tap to fill buckets with.  A sprinkler system was deemed too expensive and likely to be abused.

The swallows were flying low, the air was fresh, Baby K was mostly content to watch us from her stroller.  So far so good.
