Lovely Weekend

I spoke to grownups without interruption, in complete sentences; Saw an off Broadway play, throw acorns with my children, and did not cook dinner for 4 days.

DH took Friday afternoon off so we could drive down to his parent’s house and skip most of the traffic.  We did have a slowdown in Stamford, but missed the usual molasses in New Haven.  His sister and brother in-law arrived in the night.  We watched their little girls while they went to a conference  in NYC, Daddad wrote his sermon, and Mommom took B with her on her errands to get ready for next week’s apple picking party in which approximately 150 college students will pick apples, play guitar, build a campfire, bake pies, make chocolate and caramel apple dip, sing songs, and other things that boggle my logistical abilities – but I don’t have to organize it, Mommom does, and has for the last 17 years or so.

Fortunately for us, the oak tree in their yard has recently been pruned,

increasing the acorn crop.

The herd of cousins happily collected acorns, threw acorns (into the wheel barrow, not each other, they sting a bit too much), then tried to grind them into flour with rocks.

K pronounced acorn meat ‘YUCK,’  I read somewhere you need to soak it to get tannic acid out, they tasted bitter and felted up my mouth like a persimmon.  We brought a zip lock bag home to experiment on.

After lunch and ‘quiet time,’ DH drove me to meet my friend Katie in Nyack.  We too the TZ express to the train in Tarrytown, the walked from Grand Central Station to see the Screwtape Letters.

Wow.

The theater was packed, even for a matinee.  The stage was appropriately creepy, costumes cool, music and sound effects loud, but not too loud, cast clever and SO energetic.  Toadpipe has been raised to a gargoyle/cat mime position.  The actress who plays her is like a chameleon, miming the ‘patient’s’ actions.

We ate supper at a Turkish restaurant on 9th avenue, my lentil soup had mint in it, and made my throat feel much better.  The bus trip home gave us a chance to visit, recommend books, and discuss the play. I had so much fun.

Sunday B went with my in-laws down to King’s Point Merchant Marine Academy to attend the Sunday School and chapel service with the cadets.  My sister in law and family headed out after breakfast to spend Sunday with another branch of the family, we attended Christ Community Church in Nyack.  Just as I was wondering what to make for lunch (yes, while I should have been thinking about the service) a pot luck was announced – yeah, I didn’t cook all weekend!  (The sermon was about sloth appropriately enough)

The trip home was fairly easy (of course I wasn’t the one driving).

Mommom gave us lots of bagels to bring home, so even though the milk was sour, we had a good breakfast.  I’m tempted to put homeschool off for grocery shopping, but I’ll stay the course.  My Mom left an invitation to dinner at her house on my kitchen table when she dropped off a large bag of Cortlands, it’s like the weekend is continuing, at least as far as my cooking duties go.
