Halloween memory unexpected found at Annie Play Last night

Illuminate is running Annie tonight, we enjoyed the performance last night.  I thought the clear facemasks were clever, and with the mikes on the kids, hearing them was no trouble.

They are still using the ventriloquist’s dummy that I repaired when Matthew was in that play 9 years ago.  When I saw it, I remembered what happened on the Halloween that I was hurrying to fix that prop.

I had to completely take the head off in order to re-rig the strings that control the mouth from the back.  I had it in my hand when the doorbell rang, and as I had two doors to open to get to the porch, I grabbed the bowl and left the project dangling as I ran.  When I got to the door (with a dummy’s head drooping over the bowl) the kids backed away from my candy and ran back down my front steps!  Without any candy!

Oops.

I haven’t thought of that in years.

See?  good things come from local theater.  Go see Annie if you live near me, it’s charming.
