How do you like your Knitting Patterns?

I think I’m coming un-stuck from the how to do this Ivy Vine Mittens Pattern block I’ve had.

When I decided to write it up in 5 sizes, I realized that not only the width would be different for each size, but the row numbers where the same patterning instructions would happen would be different.   So DH suggested that instead of writing copy like “Cast on 7(9,11,13,15) stitches…Extra Small size skip to the cabled Oval section…” I write one size on one page, the next on the second and so forth, letting the pdf buyers print out just what they needed.  But, I’d like to make hard copies available at Local Yarn Stores (LYS), and who wants to sell a 12 page booklet for one mitten?  Who wants to pay $10 for a hard copy of a $5 downloadable pattern – I haven’t actually looked into what the printing costs will be, but I imagine I’m not too far off.  So I’ll eventually have to write the condensed version to save on printing space, I think?

So, knitters: what format do you like your patterns in?  Each size separate print only what you need, or everything all together and highlight your bit so you don’t get confused?

I’d so seriously like feedback!

    • Things that make knitting patterns hard: no uniform abbreviations, knitting goes right to left, bottom to top, English goes top to bottom, left to right. Text is rectangular, knitting can be any shape. And patterns are written to take up as small a space as possible to keep printing costs down!
